JAMES IRWIN

Statement

I am fascinated by how communication technologies affect us and how we relate to our immediate surroundings. In a world of technological entanglement is it possible to recover a sense of solitude, or experience control over communications, within the here and now?

I create spaces that disengage with a world that can be reached in real-time as a comment on technologies that enable us to be connected remotely. I make Wi-Fi free spaces, spaces that are invisible to radar, and empty forms containing vacuums that subvert these technologies. They are all experiments in control over my own immediate space, and attempts to channel external communication in line with my intentions.

The materials and forms available to carry out these experiments dictate how the works are presented. There is no other choice; Pyramidal Radar Absorbent Material blocks Wi-Fi signal, geometrical faceting reduces the Radar Cross Section of an object, and a vacuum can be contained within a glass sphere as it can withstand the pressure exerted on it. As physical models that draw out theories and ideas in three-dimensional space, the works offer a tangible understanding of the intangible.
